Broadchurch s1

Updated: Sep 3, 2020

Just wrapped watching s1 of Broadchurch. I was wondering how it would go three seasons, and I was right to some extent, because the first season is a self contained story. It's an emotional show and one that I probably wouldn't quite grasp if I wasn't a parent. This isn't a breakdown of the season, just a few notes. But it is recommended if you'd like a whodunit in a small connected town, with twists and turns and a pretty surprising ending.

First, I was and am still wondering why they remade the show in the US. I remember when Gracepoint debuted on FOX, though I didn't watch. It sounds like it was basically the same show, though set in California instead of England. David Tennent even starred in both series, which is also weird. If I had to guess, there was one real reason for this. Broadchurch has several incidences where it's pointed out that the age of consent in the UK is 16. Two adults in the show met their spouses when the man was over 16 and the woman was still 15. Another girl on the show, who is currently 15, is in a sexual relationship with a man who's 17. In all cases, talk is about how it's okay once they turn 16. What I'm assuming is that TV executives didn't want this on American TVs but still wanted to do the story, so they remade the whole show. Shrug.

Second, Olivia Colman's character is married to a man named Joe, who is a stay at home dad. She often works long hours and he does most of the care-taking for their son. Sound familiar? And he's bald, like I probably will be in a few years. Mildly amusing.

(Yes, this show is old now but I'd prefer to not ruin the ending.)

Well it was until it was revealed in the final episode that Joe was the killer. He secretly had a relationship with Danny, the murdered 11 year old boy. Danny had previously been best friends with his son. Joe said in his confession that he needed something to himself, and he started spending time with Danny alone at night. They talked and hugged, no abuse or sex. (Not that that makes any of this appropriate.) After a while Danny wanted to break it off, and in a rage Joe choked him to death. Most of the season finale deals with the aftermath of this getting out. Olivia Colman's character can't believe it. David Tennant's says that while Joe would not be labeled a pedophile, we don't know what would've happened. It's all unclear and messy, like real life.

Regardless, point taken show. Make sure to have (non-creepy) things you're interested in and invested in just for yourself. I think I've got that covered.
